Kimono and Hot-water bag

Years ago, when I stayed at my friend’s house around in Dec, she secretly put a hot water bag in my futon.
I didn’t know anything about it, so I braced myself for going into the cold futon.
I was extremely impressed by the warmth that eased the tension instantly and her unobtrusive consideration.

Boundaries of garden

In my head, there is a dye map of Kamakura where I lived before.
I want to dye with plants that are familiar as far as possible, so every time I dye with plants from the garden at home or plants that I encountered while taking a walk around the neighbours, the places and the colours were recorded on the map in my head.

Plants and Nature supporting Life and Way of Living Reconsidering housing, food, clothing and medicine

8, November, 2014 @Tokyo University of Agriculture
Sponsored by Tokyo University of Agriculture Open Lecture

At the Tokyo University of Agriculture Open Lecture, I took charge of one of the three courses entitled “Plants and Nature supporting Life and Way of Living Reconsidering housing, food, clothing and medicine”.
Focusing on the early days of dyeing with plants, I let the participants experience the primal dyeing process by rubbing, and herbal medicine, which is still a typical plants dye such as Akane (madder), Shikon (lithospermum root), Kihada (amur cork tree) and Kuchinashi (cape jasmine).
And at the end, we dyed with “Kusagi” (harlequin glorybower) that bear berries in the campus at this time of the season.
It is not easy to collect enough berry of Kusagi for everyone to dye with it, and it was because of at Tokyo University of Agriculture with abundant plants that made it possible.

Before Harvesting

The season turns slowly from winter to spring around this area and we all look forward to the spring to come.
On the other hand, the season turns quickly from summer to fall with no time to say good-bye to the summer.

At dusk, strolling around the neighbourhood.
It was almost time to harvest rice that are carefully grown.
It was a calm day without the wind and the golden rice fields that have begun to cast the shadow of dusk look lonely as if they were waiting quietly for harvesting.

Nevertheless, I can’t wait for the shiny new rice freshly cooked.

Plants and Nature supporting Life and Way of Living Reconsidering housing, food, clothing and medicine

I will be doing a workshop with the theme of “Plants and Nature supporting Life and Way of Living Reconsidering housing, food, clothing and medicine”.
Date: Saturday, 8, November at 1300-15:00
Venue: Tokyo University of Agriculture 2F, Atsugi Campus R&D Building

I take charge of the second of the three courses, and while thinking about how the colours looked and sensed in the primitive age, we will actually dye with berries of Kusagi (harlequin glorybower) growing in the campus.
