Shifu “Memories Falling Away” 40.0 × 27.0 cm
Shifu is a term coined by Mayuko Fujii.
It refers to a textile woven from threads made by tearing washi paper inscribed with words in ink, interlaced with silk yarn.
The texts woven into Shifu cannot be deciphered.
Precisely because they cannot be read, the presence of kotodama—the spirit of words—is felt all the more strongly.
The theme of this exhibition is Reminiscence and Prospect.
We invite you to experience Shifu—cloth that carries Fujii’s writing like a sketch of her inner landscape.
